Ameristar casino dealer charged with cheating, theft | Crime and Courts

EAST CHICAGO — A dealer at Ameristar Casino is accused of conspiring with three other gamblers to cheat the casino out of $26,000 in a dominoes betting game, court records show.

Li Rong Gao, 45, of Chicago, was charged Friday with theft and cheating and gambling, both level 6 felonies, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Lake County criminal court.

A surveillance shift manager at Ameristar called an agent with the Indiana Gaming Commission Nov. 19 to alert them of a possible cheating scheme. The Pai Gow Tiles game was making low money, he said, court records show.

Surveillance video revealed Gao allegedly would deal herself low hands when playing the game with three other casino players she knew. Gao’s self-dealing of a low hand caused those three players to win, records show.

An investigation revealed Gao on several occasions between Oct. 8 and Nov. 24 allegedly dealt herself low hands deliberately in the presence of those three players, records show.

In an interview with police, Gao denied cheating, court records state. She told police she was “just making a lot of mistakes.”

However, she also told police had been playing and dealing the game since she was a child and stated she was an expert, court records show.

The casino estimated a total loss of $26,300.75. She was fired, according to court records.
